Jason Mraz FreedomI picture something, it’s beautiful
It’s full of life, and it is all blue
I’ve seen the sunset on the beach, yeah
It makes me feel calm
When I’m calm, I feel good

Several days after hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, musician Luc Reynaud (the maker of this song) found himself in a Louisiana shelter. It was here amidst the despair that he, along with several children created a song about freedom.
Jason Mraz toured the world performing a cover of the Freedom Song after he heard it on a compilation CD. Jason took the Freedom Song with him to Ghana with the not for profit group Free The Slaves. A group of former child slaves greeted Jason’s arrival with their own version of the song.

The freest people in this world are those who have feelings of inner peace about themselves. They are responsible people, but they are not influenced by other people’s selfish interpretations of what freedom should mean.
Freedom is not handed to you on a plate. You must create your own freedom (“I picture something, it’s beautiful”). And when you have learned to rely on your own inner peace, you will certainly feel in balance and will sing: “When I’m calm, I feel good”.

And when I feel good, I sing
And the joy it brings makes me feel good
And when I feel good, I sing
And the joy it brings

Come on along
I know you really wanna feel our song
We’ve got some life to bring
We’ve got some joy in this thing

I see birds fly across the sky
And everyone’s heart flies together
Food is frying and people smiling
Like there is no other way to feel good

The American poet Archibald MacLeish defined freedom as follows: “Freedom is the right to choose: the right to create for yourself the alternatives of choice. Without the possibility of choice and the exercise of choice a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing.”

Freedom of course, means different things to different people, but the beauty of freedom is that it is defined by your own creativity and imagination. Nobody else can change that. You create your own ‘right to choose freedom’. Don’t forget that freedom comes from the experiential knowledge of our true nature, which is already free.

Singing freedom
You deserve your freedom
It’s a smile you can feel in your heart beat

If this feeling of freedom becomes so overwhelming, you will feel the need to share it with those around you. This comes natural because your heart knows that you are not separate from anybody else.
